Place: Havas Worldwide, 350 Hudson Street, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10014

Agenda

6:00 - 6:30pm - Pizza and networking

6:30 - 8:00pm - Coaching Agile Teams: Using a Maturity Model Approach to Help Teams Improve Their Performance with Mike McGonagle

Agile software development is becoming increasingly popular in companies of all sizes, and in developing software of all types. But while many agile teams are very productive there are still a large number that aren't producing the results that they should. In many cases those teams struggle to understand how to fix this and often fall back to waterfall or semi-waterfall practices, usually making the situation worse. In working with agile teams I have found that a Maturity Model framework is helpful for identifying the highest priority areas to address and for providing a roadmap for improvement. In keeping with the agile philosophy this framework is meant to provide guidance as a team goes through their ShuHaRi cycles of mastery and non-mastery, not to label a team a la CMMI. The proposed maturity model uses the Agile Manifesto as a guideline, focusing on how well the team is doing in terms of:

  • Output and quality ("Working Software")
  • Communication ("Individuals and Interaction")
  • Business value ("Customer Collaboration")
  • Release, Sprint & Backlog management ("Responding to Change")

Mike McGonagle

In over 30 years in the software industry I'm struck by one primary fact – "We can do better!" I now work with teams across the industry helping them improve, with primary areas of focus in leadership and agile coaching, and optimizing the performance of distributed teams. I have extensive experience developing and delivering successful software solutions across a variety of application areas and on a variety of architectures – SaaS, on-premise, client-server, PC and mainframe. Most recently I was CTO at ClickSquared, a cross-channel marketing company in Boston. Prior to that I've held a number of executive positions including Vice President of Software Engineering at Kronos, a global leader in workforce management applications; CTO at Deploy Solutions; and was co-founder and CTO at Exchange Applications, a pioneer in the marketing technology space. In almost all of those positions I've been responsible for distributed development environments, included near-shore and off-shore teams, which has given me a hands-on appreciation of the challenges and opportunities of that model. I am a member of the Boston Chapter of the Technology Leadership Council and IEEE. You can follow me on my blog Conquering the Chaos (conqueringthechaoscto.blogspot.com/) and on Twitter (@mikemcgon).
